Interior Minister outlines security measures instituted to prevent reoccurrence of Lawra drowning tragedy

The Minister for Interior, Muntaka Mohammed-Mubarak has said government has put in place security measures to avert any recurrence of drowning incident in Lawra.

This comes after some seven students from Lawra Senior High School in the Upper West Region drowned in the Dikpe River in Lawra on Saturday, June 14, 2025.

The students, numbering ten went on routine jogging and decided to use a canoe to cross to the other side of the river.

In the process, the canoe capsized leading to the drowning of seven students, only three survived the tragic incident.

Briefing Parliament on an update of the situation, the Interior Minster noted that after consultation with stakeholders and security agencies, the Upper West Regional Security Council (REGSEC) have put in place a number of measures to protect lives of persons who use the Dikpe river on a daily basis.

  1. Regular sensitization of canoe owners/operators and residents along the Black Volta Basin.
  2. Sensitization of students and identifiable bodies on maritime safety.
  3. The Ghana Maritime Authority has provided life jackets to canoe operators along the river.
  4. The Ghana Maritime Authority to conduct regular monitoring of canoe operators to ensure safety on the river.
  5. Ensure all canoes are regularly maintained.
  6. Provide psychosocial assistance to students of the Lawra Senior High School, especially to the three survivors.

According to the Minsiter, it is expected that these measures put in place by the Upper West Regional Security Council will avert the future occurrence of this unfortunate incident that has taken the lives of these future leaders.
