Education Minister Outlines Reforms to Strengthen Ghana’s Education Sector

The Minister for Education, Haruna Iddrisu, has highlighted key reforms aimed at improving quality and inclusivity in Ghana’s education system.
Upon assuming office, he convened a National Education Forum to identify challenges affecting the sector and to lay the foundation for evidence-based reforms across all levels.
He noted that the government has strengthened the Free SHS policy by addressing funding gaps and improving student welfare.
Significant investments have also been made in infrastructure, including securing funding to upgrade schools and expand facilities, alongside widespread projects supported by GETFund.
At the tertiary level, reforms have enhanced governance and academic freedom. Key institutions such as the University for Development Studies have been strengthened, while critical initiatives like the KNUST Teaching Hospital have received support.
Access to education has also expanded through the establishment of new universities and technical institutions, as well as the recruitment of 7,000 teachers and 1,500 lecturers to improve learning outcomes nationwide.
Teacher welfare has been improved through the introduction of a new promotion system that ensures timely career progression.
Importantly, inclusive education remains a priority, with expanded free education policies and increased support for persons with disabilities.
Looking ahead, the government plans to construct 400 new junior high schools, further expand infrastructure, recruit more educators, and strengthen basic education to address literacy and numeracy challenges.
