Dr. Apaak kicks against petition to ban dog meat consumption; says it won’t see the light of day

Member of Parliament for Builsa South Constituency in the Upper East Region, Dr. Clement Apaak, has kicked against a petition seeking to ban the trade and consumption of some domestic pet especially dog meat; saying it will not see the light of day.

It could be recalled that an International Animal Rights Activist, Natasha Choolun, petitioned the government of Ghana to ban the trade in cat and dog meat for human consumption.

According to the activist, dogs and cats are not food, but loyal companion animals and should be treated with kindness and respect; not brutalized and eaten.

The activist further noted that the trade-in dogs and cats are widespread across African countries, making them unattractive to tourists who were aware of the “cruel” industries and unwilling to invest in those countries.

But the MP, who tags himself as President of the Global Dog Eaters Association, has rejected the petition with a call on his constituents and other consumers of dog meat to increase their consumption.

In an interview on Daybreak Upper East programme on A1 Radio, Dr. Apaak believes the petitioner only ‘’seeks publicity if not, she should not undermine other cultures.’’

He argued that “We are people of different backgrounds with different believes and tastes. Some people do worship some animals while sacrifices some for their gods for protection and other wishes.  So, if you believe we should stop eating or enjoying such meat what meat should we then consume. In as much as the petitioner’s call has certain thinking, she should relook and understand that we have various cultures with dos and don’ts. Some cultures do not permit people to eat catfish or any seafood rather dog or cat meat so if you say the government should ban dog and cat meat what are you doing to such people.”

“I expect members {dog eaters} to increase consumption over this weekend. It’s our human, cultural and traditional right.” He added.
