AFCON 2027 Qualifiers: Sports Minister, NSA boss inspect Accra Sports Stadium before Black Stars v Gambia game

The visit took place on Friday, 11 September, with officials assessing the readiness of the country’s main football venue ahead of the Black Stars’ upcoming fixtures.

The inspection was carried out before Nations FC’s 1-1 draw with FC Diarra in the second leg of their CAF Confederation Cup preliminary-round tie at the stadium.

Ghana are scheduled to host The Gambia in their second Group C qualifier on 29 September, with the match set to kick off at 16:00 GMT.

The condition of the Accra Sports Stadium has come under increased scrutiny in recent months, with concerns raised over its suitability for international matches.

Berekum West MP Dickson Kyere-Duah recently described the facility as a “death trap” following a separate inspection, intensifying calls for urgent improvements.

The latest assessment forms part of efforts by the Sports Ministry, the NSA and the Ghana Football Association (GFA) to ensure the venue satisfies the standards required by the Confederation of African Football (CAF).

Pressure remains on authorities to upgrade the country’s sporting infrastructure, with Ghana currently lacking a stadium that fully meets both CAF and FIFA requirements.

GFA Deputy General Secretary Alex Asante was also present during the inspection.

Meanwhile, Black Stars coach Carlos Queiroz is expected to return to Ghana this week, where he is set to be officially reintroduced and announce his squad for the opening matches of the qualifying campaign.

Ghana begin their Group C campaign away to Côte d’Ivoire at the Stade de la Paix in Bouaké on 24 September before returning home to face The Gambia three days later as they seek a place at the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations.
