Medeama and Nations FC receive $100,000 despite early CAF inter-club eliminations

The financial support is part of CAF’s efforts to provide greater assistance to clubs participating in its continental competitions, including those eliminated at the opening stage.

Medeama, the defending Ghana Premier League champions, exited the Champions League after suffering a 4-1 aggregate defeat by Congolese giants TP Mazembe.

The Ghanaian side lost the first leg 1-0 at the TNA Park before Mazembe completed the job with a 3-1 victory in the return leg in Lubumbashi.

Mazembe’s reward for progressing to the second preliminary round is a meeting with Zambia’s Red Arrows.

Nations FC, meanwhile, saw their maiden continental campaign come to an end after a 2-1 aggregate defeat by Mali’s FC Diarra in the Confederation Cup.

The Ghana FA Cup holders were beaten 1-0 in the first leg in Bamako before drawing 1-1 in the return fixture at the Accra Sports Stadium.

FC Diarra will now face ASKO Kara in the second preliminary round as they continue their bid to reach the group stage.

The early exits mean Ghana will have no representative in the group stage of either the 2026-27 CAF Champions League or Confederation Cup.

Medeama will now shift their focus to defending their Ghana Premier League title, while Nations FC will turn their attention to the Division One League after their historic first appearance in continental competition.

Despite their disappointing results, the $100,000 payment provides a financial boost to both clubs and is expected to help offset some of the costs associated with their continental campaigns.

For Ghanaian clubs, the development represents a significant change from previous years, when teams eliminated at the opening stage of CAF competitions received little or no financial return for their participation.
