A presidential candidate who refuses to concede defeat in the face of obvious loss is a coward and a danger to our democracy – Miracles

Dennis Miracles Aboagye, spokesperson for former Vice President Dr Mahamudu Bawumia, has stated that any presidential candidate who refuses to concede defeat in the face of an obvious loss is a threat to Ghana’s democracy.

He made the point that courageous leaders act in time to save Ghana’s peace.

“A Prez Candidate who refuses to concede defeat in the face of obvious loss at a time when there are multiple incidents of violence across the country is a coward and a danger to our democracy. Courageous leaders act in time to save our peace,” he wrote on his Facebook page.

His comments come at a time when a flagbearer hopeful of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Kennedy Ohene Agyapong, declared that in a presidential election, he would only concede defeat after the Electoral Commission (EC) announces the complete and final results.

“Until the last constituency results are declared, if I am a Presidential candidate, I will never accept defeat. I will never accept defeat until the Electoral Commission comes out to declare, I will never accept defeat,” he stated.

Mr Agyapong, who is usually known for his candid statements and a no-nonsense candidate, urged NPP delegates to choose “bold men” to lead the party.

He stated that the NPP needs fearless leadership that can withstand the test of the opponents.

“This battle needs bold men to be solidly behind us,” he said.

He criticised some of his opponents for focusing their campaigns on personal attacks rather than on substantive policies, particularly job creation, which he said should be the central issue in the upcoming election.

“The delegates must reject any candidate who does not talk about jobs but spends time attacking my personality and saying I am not presidential,” he said.

The flagbearer race is expected to intensify in the coming months as aspirants continue nationwide campaigns to court delegates and lay out their visions for Ghana.

The New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) flagbearer race is slated for January 31, 2026, with February 14, 202,6 scheduled as the date in the event of a run-off.

The NPP recently conducted a balloting exercise to determine the order in which aspirants will appear on the ballot paper for the upcoming flagbearer election. Mr Agyapong drew the first slot, followed by Dr Bryan Acheampong, Dr Mahamudu Bawumia, Dr Yaw Osei Adutwum, and Kwabena Agyei Agyepong.
