2025 AFCON Qualifiers: Playing Sudan in Accra is a huge relief – ExCO member, Dr Randy Abbey

His comments come after the Accra Sports Stadium received provisional approval to hold the Falcons in the upcoming Matchday three matches of the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifiers.

The Baba Yara Stadium, previously the only venue authorized for CAF and FIFA-sanctioned events, lost its license due to its subpar playing surface.

Expressing his relief regarding the stadium’s approval, Dr. Abbey shared his sentiments during an appearance on Metro TV.

“CAF has communicated with us, providing what you might term a conditional approval,” he noted.

“This approval allows us to host the game on October 11 at the Accra Sports Stadium. However, there are certain conditions we must meet prior to the match. Essentially, this approval is limited to this game, and CAF must be satisfied at all stages before we can hold further matches.”

He emphasized the importance of playing at home, stating, “It’s a huge relief to have this game in Ghana rather than travelling for an away match. Our focus now should be on preparing the team to secure three points on the 11th. We hope that those responsible will ensure we don’t face similar challenges in the future.”

The Black Stars are set to face Sudan, coached by former Ghanaian coach Kwesi Appiah, on Friday, October 11, in Accra, before travelling to Libya for their next qualifier at the Martyrs of February Stadium.

Ghana’s coach, Otto Addo, is under pressure to achieve a victory, as the team has yet to secure a win in the qualifiers. They suffered a 1-0 defeat to Angola at the Baba Yara Stadium and managed only a 1-1 draw against Niger in Berkane.

Currently, the Black Stars sit third in Group F with just one point from two matches.
