Yumba Special School commemorate International Day of Persons with Disabilities

As part of activities to Mark this year’s International Day of Persons with Disabilities, Yumba special school which deals with children living with special needs embarked on a clean-up exercise at the Sanzyirigu community to commemorate the day.

Community members were as well educated on the need to place much attention on special children due to their conditions.

In an interview with the assistant head teacher of Yumba special school, Madam Mildred Mantamya indicated that as vulnerable as the children are, grants used in taking care of the needs of these special children is not enough.

She called on philanthropists to support the school to help cater for these vulnerable children.

Madam Mildred indicated that though sometimes their feeding grants delay, they purchase food staffs on credit and pay later when they are finally released.

The special children after passing out from basic school undergo attachment with their job coaches where they acquire practical knowledge on varied trades after which they could begin a trade on their own.

A passed student who benefited from the support from Yumba special school, Hikimatu Adam shared her story with fiila news.

Hikimatu Adam indicates that teachers at Yumba special school enrolled her in a trade where she now makes ends meet for her personal upkeep.

According to her she started with a capital of GHC 7.00 and she can now boost of thousands of Ghana Cedis as savings.

Speaking on the upkeep of the children Madam Christiana YeYe a teacher at Yumba Special School who emerged as the second runner up best teacher for the year 2019, indicates that some parents give little or no attention to these special children hence making them feel irrelevant in society.

She therefore encouraged parents of these special children to show them much affection due to their special condition.

The theme for this year’s celebration is: “Promoting the participation of persons with disabilities and their leadership: taking action on the 2030 development agenda”.
