Tamale – Savana Signatures holds round table discussion on countering misinformation and disinformation

Savana Signatures, a non-profit organization with focus on innovative use of Information and Communication Technology (ICT) to design and deliver inclusive, scalable social interventions in the areas of Inclusive Quality Education, Sexual and Reproductive Health, Livelihood and Economic development has organized a round table discussion on countering misinformation and disinformation in Tamale to promote peace, security and development in Northern Ghana.

Dr. Stephen Agbenyo, the executive Director of Savana Signatures says the topic for the discussion is of great importance to the social cohesion and development of not just Northern Ghana but Ghana as a whole. He further stated that Ghana has porous borders and the situation has significantly contributed greatly to the insecurity in Ghana. As the country gears up for the 2024 elections there is the need to counter false information.

One of the speakers for the round table discussion, Dr Jacob Abudu (head of department; media and communication studies at the Tamale Technical University) reiterated that the role of the media is to serve as gatekeepers and promote media literacy and also to leverage on investigative journalism in countering misinformation and disinformation.

Press attaché at the U.S Embassy Ghana, Kevin Brosnahan revealed that a study in 2018 found that false information on X, then Twitter, spread six times faster than the truth.
