Sherigu SHS students march to Bolga Municipal Assembly to demand better infrastructure

Students of Sherigu Senior High School in the Bolgatanga Municipality of the Upper East Region on Monday, May 10, 2021,  marched to the Bolgatanga Municipal Assembly to demand for better infrastructure and furniture to enhance academic work in the school.

The Sherigu Community Day Senior High School was established in 2013 as a community initiative and was absorbed by the government in 2018.

Since then, the school has been operating with just a five-unit classroom block and a pavilion.

The school runs three programmes namely Business, General Arts and General Agriculture.

But the school, which has an enrollment of about 300 students, is bedevilled with infrastructure challenges and lacks adequate furnitur

The inadequate classrooms have compelled the school to combine General Arts A and B of the first year in one class.

Business three and General Arts three students of the third year are also combined in one class, while the first year Agriculture students study under a pavilion.

Due to inadequate furniture, students are forced to stand for long hours during classes while others sit on the floor.

The absence of a staff common room for teachers compels them to sit on the veranda of the school for their activities.

The students want the government to urgently come to their aid.

A student, Regina Amoah, told Citi News “the poor state of school infrastructure and inadequate furniture is negatively affecting teaching and learning as students are compelled to stand for long hours with others having to sit on the floor for studies.”

Another student, Juliana Kolog, pleaded with the government to create a conducive learning environment for them.

After a crunch meeting between the leadership of the student body, the authorities of the Ghana Education Service and the Bolgatanga Municipal Assembly, the Bolga Municipal Director of Education, Anne Estella Kyeeebo assured that she will take steps to ascertain the challenges in the school for redress.

The Bolgatanga Municipal Chief Executive who also hails from Sherigu, Joseph Ameyuure, assured the students of the government’s commitment to addressing the infrastructure and furniture challenges.
