Search for new Black Stars coach: Committee submit report to Executive Council

The report was received by GFA President Kurt Okraku on February 27, 2024, and the Executive Council will now review the recommendations and make a decision.

The committee which is chaired by Mark Addo, who is the Vice President of the Football Association was put together following the dismissal of the then-head coach, Chris Hughton to recommend a coach.

The former Premier League manager was shown the exit following Black Stars’ poor performance at the recently concluded 2023 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) hosted in Ivory Coast.

Ghana exited the tournament with two points after suffering a defeat against Cape Verde and drawing 2:2 with Egypt and Mozambique respectively.

The search committee was tasked with identifying suitable and competent coaches for the position.

The committee interviewed several interested candidates and compiled a report that will guide the GFA in deciding on the next Black Stars coach. Over 500 coaches have applied for the vacant Black Stars coaching job as revealed by Mark Addo.

However, multiple reports in the local media suggest that Otto Addo is the leading candidate for the top position, with former Ghana international Michael Essien being considered as assistant coach.

Once the coaching decision is resolved, the GFA will engage with the Ministry of Youth and Sports, as well as other key stakeholders, for their support.

Meanwhile, the Ghana Football Association (GFA) are expected to announce the new head coach for the senior national team next month before the team regroup for their doubleheader in the 2026 World Cup qualifier against Mali in June.

Other members of the committee are Banker Kojo Addae Mensah, Professor Joseph Kwame Mintah, Technical Director of the Ghana Football Association, Ghanaian football legend Opoku Nti, and William Kartey, Chief Director of the Ministry of Youth and Sports.
