Rainer Kraft replaces Ibrahim Tanko as Accra Lions coach

Accra Lions have confirmed Rainer Kraft's return as head coach following Ibrahim Tanko's departure.

Tanko, a former Ghana international, mutually agreed to part ways with the club halfway through the 2024/25 season.

The ex-Dortmund player led the club to second place last season but leaves following a tough first half to the campaign.

Meanwhile, Kraft, who led the team to a historic Ghana Premier League qualification four years ago will take over as head coach.

“Accra Lions Football Club announces that Ibrahim Tanko, the head coach of the club, has mutually agreed with the management to step aside and focus on pursuing other important projects,” wrote the club.

“Tanko, who has been an integral part of our club’s growth and vision, officially handed over his responsibilities to German trainer Rainer Kraft, marking a smooth transition of leadership.

“Accra Lions gained promotion to the Ghana Premier League under Coach Rainer Kraft in his first spell with the club from 2019 to 2021. He returns with vast experience and an understanding of our club’s mission to nurture talent and compete at the highest level in the Ghana Premier League.”

In a gesture of mutual respect and continuity, Tanko provided detailed handover notes to ensure a seamless transition for his successor.

Accra Lions will host Bibiani Goldstars in the final game of the first round on Sunday in Sogakope.
