PURC Holds Maiden Media Dialogue on Tariff Adjustment in Northern Region

The Public Utilities Regulatory Commission (PURC) has held its first-ever media dialogue in the Northern Region to discuss the current tariff adjustments for water and electricity, which are set to take effect from May 1.
Addressing the media, the Northern Regional Manager of the PURC, Mr. Ali Simon, explained that the Commission periodically reviews tariffs through what is now known as the Quarterly Tariff Adjustment Mechanism — a process that was formerly referred to as the Automatic Adjustment Formula. He emphasized that this tariff review system is not a conditionality imposed by the International Monetary Fund (IMF), but rather a regulatory practice to ensure fairness and sustainability in utility services.
Mr. Simon also highlighted the Commission’s efforts in addressing consumer concerns. Between January and March this year, the PURC received a total of 290 complaints related to electricity services provided by the Northern Electricity Distribution Company (NEDCo), and 31 complaints concerning water services.
In addition to resolving these complaints, the PURC has facilitated several interventions to improve service delivery.
These include the relocation, replacement, and repair of six transformers. Notably, two faulty transformers at Katariga Springfield and Nyanshegu were replaced with 100kVA units. The Commission also facilitated the repair of a leaking transformer at Balishei and the fixing of a transformer with faulty terminal bushings at Kpendua in the Tolon District.
