Protests over missing anti-Buhari priest

Protests have broke out in Nigeria’s south-eastern city of Enugu over the disappearance of a popular Catholic preacher days after he called on President Muhammadu Buhari to resign in a widely shared video.

Aides to Fr Ejike Mbaka told his supporters – who had gathered at his church for a weekly prayer meeting – that the priest had not been seen since he left to meet Bishop Valentine Onaga two days ago.

The bishop’s spokesperson told BBC Igbo that they would investigate the matter but some protesters have since moved to his residence to protest.

Fr Mbaka, who is known for his strong political views, has attracted a lot of attention lately because of his criticism of Mr Buhari, who he backed in the 2015 and 2019 elections.

The president’s office said that the priest had withdrawn his support because his request for state contracts was turned down.
