Over 50,000 teachers promoted after 2024 aptitude test; payroll issues resolved – GNAT

According to GNAT, up to 50,458 teachers out of 54,227 who passed the 2024 aptitude test have been successfully promoted.
This information was conveyed in a letter from GNAT General Secretary, Thomas Musah, to the association’s members.
The letter detailed that the promotions were implemented in April 2025, following a meeting with the Ghana Education Service (GES) on Friday, April 25, 2025.
GNAT further indicated that plans are in place to finalize the promotions for the remaining teachers from the 2024 batch, along with addressing the backlog from 2023, in May 2025.
In addition to promotions, GNAT reported positive developments regarding payroll issues. The association confirmed that 1,417 out of 1,579 teachers who were previously removed from the payroll have had their salaries reinstated. The cases of the remaining 162 teachers are expected to be resolved.
Concerning lower rank promotions, the GES has informed the unions that data from all 16 regions has been submitted, and these placements are also slated for May 2025.
GNAT also addressed the matter of upgrading teachers who have returned from further studies, an issue that has seen delays since 2023. The GES Director-General has committed to ensuring that all eligible teachers in this category are upgraded by the end of May 2025.
Looking ahead, GNAT announced that a stakeholders meeting is scheduled for May 2025 to determine dates for the next aptitude test for promotions.
Furthermore, outstanding issues within the Collective Agreement for GES staff, including salary disparities on the Single Spine Pay Structure, are set to be addressed in the coming month.
The teacher union expressed its appreciation to President John Mahama for the announced 20 per cent allowance for teachers in deprived areas. GNAT also welcomed the decoupling of Director 2 and Director 1 positions from political districts and regions, a move that is expected to facilitate the promotion of Deputy Directors.
GNAT’s General Secretary, Thomas Musah, described the progress as a “breakthrough” and conveyed the union’s gratitude to the President and the GES for their intervention and cooperation.
This progress follows previous demands by GNAT, which had given the government until April 30, 2025, to resolve issues such as the non-implementation of the Scheme of Service for GES staff and challenges related to the Human Resource Management Information System.
These demands were part of directives issued by the National Labour Commission after mediating disputes between teacher unions and the GES.
