NPP demands justice over Independence Day killing in Nanton

The New Patriotic Party (NPP) in the Northern Region has condemned the fatal shooting of a resident during Independence Day celebrations in Nanton and is calling for swift justice for the family of the deceased.
Addressing a press conference on Tuesday, March 10, the party expressed shock over the killing of Amadu Ibn Shamtut, described as a hardworking family man with several dependents, including wives and children.
The incident reportedly occurred on Friday, March 6, 2026, during activities marking Ghana’s Independence Day in the Nanton District.
According to the NPP, the victim was allegedly shot in the presence of state security personnel. The party claimed the suspected perpetrator, identified as the Chief of Cheko, popularly known as “Wata,” along with accomplices, fled the scene immediately after the incident.
The party extended its condolences to the bereaved family and urged authorities to ensure that those responsible are arrested and prosecuted.
The NPP also expressed concern over what it described as growing insecurity in the Nanton area, recalling a similar incident in October 2025 when another resident, Ibrahim Seidu, was reportedly shot and killed under comparable circumstances.
Criticising what it termed the government’s silence on the matter, the party called for stronger security measures, particularly during public gatherings in the district.
It further urged the Northern Regional Security Council to take decisive action to safeguard residents and ensure that perpetrators of violence are brought to justice.
