NEDCo Explores Advanced Metering Technology to Reduce Power Losses

The Northern Electricity Distribution Company (NEDCo) is considering the adoption of advanced metering technology as part of efforts to reduce electricity losses that currently exceed 40 percent, a situation officials say is affecting revenue, operational efficiency, and service delivery.

The move follows a technical engagement with NITES Group during a visit to Tamale, where discussions focused on potential collaboration to modernise power distribution and curb both technical and commercial losses across the network.

Electricity losses remain a major challenge within Ghana’s energy distribution sector, particularly in the northern operational zone, where inefficiencies continue to strain finances and undermine reliable supply to consumers.

During meetings with engineers and management staff, the visiting team presented a comprehensive solution designed to enhance metering accuracy, provide real-time monitoring of electricity flows, and detect irregularities across distribution lines. The system, already in use at millions of metering points in Europe, is intended to give utilities full visibility over consumption patterns while enabling early identification of leakages, theft, and technical faults.

The delegation was led by Dr. Dmitar Cickovic, who explained that the technology has delivered measurable reductions in losses in several markets and can be adapted to suit local network conditions.

Another team member, Vladimir Petrovic, noted that the solution has been tested in diverse regulatory environments and offers strong scalability and long-term value for utilities seeking to modernise infrastructure.

The engagement was facilitated through earlier consultations initiated by Gilbert Yelewere Meznar in partnership with AL-Sofwan Company Limited, led by its Chief Executive Officer, Chief Sofwan Alhassan. The local partner has been instrumental in coordinating dialogue between the two organisations.

He expressed confidence that introducing the system would strengthen revenue protection, ensure fair and accurate billing, and ultimately improve service reliability for customers.

Both parties described the discussions as productive and signalled optimism about forming a long-term partnership. The proposed collaboration is expected to support ongoing national efforts to reduce distribution losses, improve grid efficiency, and promote sustainable energy delivery.

Energy analysts note that improved efficiency in power distribution could translate into better living conditions, enhanced business productivity, and accelerated economic development, particularly in underserved regions.
