N/R: NPP opens nominations in 9 constituencies

The governing New Patriotic Party (NPP) has officially opened nominations in the nine (9) orphan constituencies in the northern region. The region has eighteen (18) constituencies following the regional reorganization in 2019.

The governing party and the largest opposition National Democratic Congress in the 2020 general elections both won 9 seats apiece.

The nine constituencies are: Sagnarigu, Savelugu, Tamale North, Tamale South and Tamale Central.  The rest include, Kpandai, Wulensi, Saboba and Kumbungu constituencies.

The Deputy Northern Regional Secretary of the NPP, Jeremiah Bediako, in an exclusive interview said prospective candidates can pick their nomination forms at the constituency levels from the election committees.

“Once you’re a party member, you’re qualified to contest. But any person interested to contest would have to pay the required amount at the bank and present the bankers draft to the constituency elections committee to enable he/she access the forms” he explained.

Mr. Bediako assured the process will be transparent, free and fair and everybody will be treated equally.

“We don’t intend to stop any candidate from picking up the nomination forms. One thing is picking nomination and the other is filing your nominations.

“We have no intention as a party to stop anybody from participating in the contest. However, the vetting committee will scrutinize the candidates to determine those who are eligible” he emphasized.

Meanwhile, some bigwigs expected to pick nominations include, Hajia Fathia Abdul Aziz, vying for the Savelugu Constituency, Madam Felicia Tetteh, the NPP 2020 candidate for Sagnarigu running again, Hon Abdul Fatawu Salam Hamza, the 2020 NPP candidate for Kumbungu also going again, Hon Matthew Nyindam, former MP for Kpandai.

Other prospective candidates who are anticipated to join the race in various constituencies include, Clara Napaga Tia Sulemana, Habib Mohammed, among others.
