MTN GHANA SENSITIZES DRIVERS ON DEFENSIVE DRIVING

Telecommunications Giant MTN Ghana has organized a sensitization programme to equip its fleet drivers with professional defensive driving skills. The initiative forms part of MTN’s broader commitment to promoting road safety and reducing accidents involving corporate and commercial vehicles.

Chief Superintendent Alexander Kweku Obeng, Director in charge of Motor Traffic and Transport Department (MTTD) at the Ghana Police Service, emphasized the importance of the collaboration between MTN and national road safety stakeholders. He noted that the programme aligns with the National Road Safety Strategy, which seeks to enhance public education, awareness creation, and safer road practices.
“The purpose of why we are here as a group—the collaboration that is required within the national road safety strategy—is to enhance public education and awareness creation so we can deliver safer road services.”
Chief Superintendent Obeng expressed concern over the sharp increase in road crashes recorded this year. He disclosed that within the first ten months of the year, more than 7,000 crash cases were reported nationwide, involving over 20,000 victims. Out of these, 2,400 people lost their lives, while more than 13,000 others sustained various degrees of injury—figures that represent a rise compared to the same period last year.

He stressed the need for enhanced alertness, improved stakeholder collaboration, and consistent sensitization as the country prepares to enter 2025.
According to him, the Ghana Police Service is also rolling out new initiatives to help identify and sanction road traffic offenders to improve discipline on the roads.
The training by MTN Ghana is expected to strengthen drivers’ capacity to prevent accidents, ensure passenger safety, and contribute to national efforts towards reducing road carnage.
