MTN Ghana Marks 30 Years of Connectivity with Media and Stakeholders Forum

MTN Ghana has organized a media and stakeholders forum to mark its 30th anniversary of operations in Ghana, reflecting on the company’s contribution to the country’s digital transformation and outlining plans for further investment in connectivity.

Speaking at the forum, Senior Manager for Base Station Subsystems at MTN Ghana, Mr. Emmanuel Afutu, said mobile connectivity has transformed the lives of Ghanaians over the past three decades, evolving from a luxury into an essential tool for communication, business, education, digital payments and access to opportunities.
He said MTN Ghana began 30 years ago with the simple mission of connecting people and has since expanded its network to serve more than 31 million subscribers.
Mr. Afutu acknowledged that the company had faced network and service challenges over the years but said feedback from customers had played an important role in driving continuous improvement.

As part of its efforts to strengthen connectivity, MTN Ghana plans to invest approximately US$1.1 billion over the next three years, including about US$380 million in 2026, to expand its network, improve service quality and enhance the resilience of its infrastructure.
He said the company is also expanding its network across Northern Ghana, with 80 new sites being deployed across four regions.
The Northern Region is expected to receive 38 new sites, followed by the Savannah Region with 17, the Upper East Region with 14 and the North East Region with 11.Nationwide, MTN Ghana plans to construct 500 new sites as part of its expansion programme.
Mr. Afutu said the impact of the investments should not be measured solely by the number of towers or sites constructed, but by what improved connectivity enables.
He said better connectivity allows farmers to access markets, young people to participate in online education, businesses to receive digital payments, families to remain connected and communities to gain improved access to security and other essential services.
On digital inclusion, he stressed that access to technology must be complemented by the skills and opportunities required for people to benefit meaningfully from digital services.
He also highlighted the continued growth of MTN’s Mobile Money platform. During the first half of 2026, MoMo transaction value increased by 44.4 percent year-on-year, while active users grew by 3.1 percent and transaction volumes increased by 23.3 percent. Mobile revenue also recorded 23.3 percent growth.
According to Mr. Afutu, Mobile Money has evolved beyond a payment platform to become an important tool for businesses, money transfers, savings and participation in Ghana’s growing digital economy.
He said the increasing use of digital services also makes cybersecurity and data privacy critical, reaffirming MTN Ghana’s commitment to protecting customer information and strengthening public trust.
Mr. Afutu said MTN Ghana views itself not only as a telecommunications company but also as a contributor to Ghana’s social and economic development, using connectivity and digital services to create opportunities, promote inclusion and support communities across the country.
