Medeama withdraw players from Kotoko collaboration after fan uproar ahead of DC United match

The proposed collaboration between Asante Kotoko SC and Medeama SC to face DC United in the 2024 Capital City Africa Cup has faced a sudden hurdle.

Initially, Kotoko and Medeama agreed to form a joint team for the ceremonial game due to Kotoko’s visa challenges.

Medeama’s players, with valid US visas from their participation in the Capital City Africa Cup last year, were meant to support Kotoko.

However, the plan was met with strong opposition from Kotoko fans, who expressed discontent over sharing a squad with a rival club.

This led to Medeama’s eventual withdrawal from the fixture, leaving Kotoko to find a solution on their own for the match against DC United.

This controversy highlights the intense club loyalties in Ghanaian football, where the idea of rivals teaming up – even for an international cause – can stir strong emotions among supporters.

Despite these tensions, Kotoko remains committed to participating in the tournament.

The Capital City Africa Cup is part of Ghana Week DC 2024, which aims to promote Ghanaian culture, music, and sports to a global audience, making this a significant event for both Kotoko and Ghanaian football as a whole.

The Kotoko contingent will depart Ghana for the USA on Wednesday, October 9, 2024, for the match that will take place in three days at the Audi Field in Washington DC.
