Mali: ‘It’s clear the civilians are not in charge’

The military in Mali has announced that both interim President Bah Ndaw and Prime Minister Moctar Ouane have been removed from their positions.

This is Mali’s second coup in nine months.

Col Assimi Goïta castigated the president and prime minister, blaming them for failing to avert the nationwide strikes and accusing them of sabotaging the country’s transition.

He said they should have consulted him before announcing a new cabinet.

Col Goita led last year’s coup and following international pressure was forced to put in place a transitional government – in which he made himself the vice-president.

Now he has torn up the agreements and put himself in charge of the country once again.

Elections are still promised for next year but in Mali it’s clear once again that civilians are not in charge.
