Majority Caucus visits residence of late Murtala Mohammed; offers condolences to family

The Majority caucus in Parliament has paid a condolence visit to the family of the late Member of Parliament for Tamale Central, Dr. Ibrahim Murtala Muhammed, in Accra, following his tragic passing in a military helicopter crash on Wednesday, August 6, 2025.

The Majority caucus led by First Deputy Speaker, Bernard Ahiafor offered words of comfort and solidarity to the bereaved family at their residence in Accra.

Dr. Murtala Muhammed died alongside Defence Minister Dr. Edward Omane Boamah and six others when the Ghana Armed Forces aircraft crashed in the Ashanti Region.

MP for Karaga, Dr. Mohammed Amin Adam, who spoke on behalf of the family, led an Islamic prayer for the late lawmaker and urged the family to take solace in the legacy he left behind.

“We are worried here, we are consoling each other, but our brother is in a better place,” he stated.

The visit forms part of a series of national mourning gestures in honour of the eight individuals who lost their lives while travelling to attend a national event in Obuasi.

The crash which has plunged the nation into a state of mourning claimed the lives of two senior government officials; the Minister for Defence, Dr. Edward Omane Boamah, and the Minister for Environment, Science, Technology and Innovation, Ibrahim Murtala Mohammed.

The others were; Alhaji Limuna Muniru Mohammed, Acting Deputy National Security Coordinator, Dr. Samuel Sarpong and National Vice Chairman of the ruling NDC, Mr. Samuel Aboagye.

The military officers involved were; Squadron Leader Peter Bafemi Anala, Flight Officer Manaen Twum Ampadu and Sergeant Ernest Addo Mensah.

Meanwhile, the Ghana Armed Forces is expected to lead the official investigation into the crash, while tributes continue to pour in for the fallen officials.

The government has ordered all national flags to be flown at half-mast, and funeral arrangements are expected to be announced in the coming days.
