Mahama Cares Fund receives GH¢6.1m from salary donations by President Mahama, appointees – Kwakye Ofosu

The Controller and Accountant General has transferred GH¢6.1 million to the Ghana Medical Trust Fund (Mahama Cares) deducted from the salaries of President John Dramani Mahama and his appointees, that’s according to Presidential Spokesperson Felix Kwakye Ofosu.

In a social media post on May 7, 2026 , Kwakye Ofosu disclosed that the Controller and Accountant-General’s Department has officially confirmed the deduction and transfer of the funds into the medical trust fund.

The contributions to the Fund stem from a pledge made by President Mahama during the launch of the Ghana Medical Trust Fund, popularly known as “Mahama Cares,” last year, where he donated six months of his salary to support the initiative.

The President subsequently urged all political appointees to contribute one month’s salary each to the fund as part of efforts to support healthcare financing and medical assistance for vulnerable citizens.

“The Controller and Accountant- General has formally notified Government that he has deducted and transferred a total of GHS 6.1 million to the Fund pursuant to the President’s directive,” he wrote.

Additionally, appointees who failed to meet the President’s initial deadline for asset declaration were directed to forfeit three months of their salaries to the fund as a penalty measure.

According to Mr. Kwakye Ofosu, the Controller and Accountant General is currently making arrangements for the transfer of a final tranche covering deductions from appointees who defaulted on the asset declaration requirement.
