Mahama backs $1bn AU Peace Fund target

President John Dramani Mahama has called for the accelerated implementation of the African Union Peace Fund’s resource mobilisation strategy, including the effective application of the 0.2% import levy, to ensure sustainable financing for Africa’s peace and security efforts.
Speaking at the 21st Extraordinary Session of the AU Assembly of Heads of State and Government on Sunday, August 30, President Mahama said persistent and evolving conflicts across the continent require stronger implementation of existing peace and security mechanisms.
He stressed that the effectiveness of the continent’s peace architecture would depend not only on better coordination but also on reliable and predictable resources to support timely interventions.
“Early warning must translate into early action, and early action requires resources that are available in a timely and predictable manner,” he said.
He welcomed progress in operationalising the AU Peace Fund and supported its continued capitalisation towards the $1 billion target.
He further called for stronger mobilisation of resources from African financial institutions, the private sector and other African sources to reduce dependence on external financing and strengthen the continent’s capacity to respond to conflicts.
