Laryea Kingston becomes first Ghanaian coach to qualify Uganda U-17 for a major tournament

Laryea Kingston has etched his name in East African football history after becoming the first Ghanaian coach to qualify Uganda’s U17 national team for a major international tournament.

The former Ghana U17 head coach achieved the milestone by guiding the Uganda U17 side to the 2026 U17 Africa Cup of Nations following a commanding run in the CECAFA U17 Qualifiers.

Kingston sealed the historic feat with a 3–0 victory over Ethiopia in the semi-finals, a result that confirmed Uganda’s place at next year’s continental showpiece in Morocco. The qualification caps a remarkable start to his tenure, having earlier overseen emphatic wins including a 4–0 triumph over Burundi and a 9–0 demolition of Sudan.

His impact on the Ugandan youth setup has been swift and transformative. Since taking over as head of Uganda’s Men’s Youth Teams, Kingston has introduced a modern, energetic and tactically disciplined style of play that has resonated strongly with his young squad. The results — 17 goals scored and just 2 conceded on the road to qualification — speak volumes of his influence.

For Uganda, the achievement marks a major step forward in their youth football development. For Kingston, it represents a proud moment in his coaching career and a historic accomplishment for Ghanaian coaches abroad. His success has drawn admiration both in Uganda and back home in Ghana, where many have followed his progress with keen interest.

Uganda will now enter the tournament with renewed confidence — led by a Ghanaian coach who has not only made history but is shaping the future of East African youth football.
