Kurt Okraku admits he underestimated size of GFA job on taking office
Ghana Football Association (GFA) President Kurt Okraku says he only fully understood the magnitude of the job after assuming office in 2019.

“I didn’t appreciate the enormity of the task at the GFA until I walked through that door on my first day in office. Then I realised there’s a lot to be done than I expected,” he said in an interview with Asaase Radio.
Okraku first secured the presidency in 2019, taking charge of the association at a difficult period for Ghana football following a major corruption scandal that triggered sweeping reforms and led to the departure of long-serving FA boss Kwesi Nyantakyi.
He has since overseen administrative restructuring and initiatives aimed at restoring credibility to the domestic game. In 2025, he was re-elected unopposed for a second term, extending his mandate to continue those reforms.
Despite these efforts, critics argue that results on the pitch have not matched the administrative progress, pointing to the Black Stars’ decline and back-to-back Africa Cup of Nations group stage exits.
Okraku, however, has defended his tenure, noting that Ghana qualified for two consecutive FIFA World Cups during his leadership and citing what he describes as significant growth in women’s football structures and investment as signs of broader development.
