Kofi Adams summons GFA leadership for crisis meeting over Black Stars’ poor start to AFCON qualifiers

Sports and Recreation Minister Kofi Adams has summoned the leadership of the Ghana Football Association (GFA) for a crisis meeting following the Black Stars’ poor start to the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers.

The meeting is scheduled for Friday as Ghana seeks answers to the team’s disappointing performances in their opening two Group C matches.

The Black Stars are bottom of the group without a point after suffering defeats against Ivory Coast and The Gambia.

Ghana began their qualifying campaign with a 2-0 defeat by Ivory Coast before throwing away a two-goal lead in their second match against The Gambia.

The Black Stars eventually lost 4-2 at the Accra Sports Stadium, leaving them with a difficult task in their bid to qualify for the tournament.

The disappointing start was followed by the departure of head coach Carlos Queiroz, who mutually agreed to part ways with the GFA on Thursday, 1 October.

The Portuguese coach had been appointed earlier this year to lead Ghana through the 2027 AFCON qualifying campaign and the 2026 World Cup.

Adams, who is also the Member of Parliament for Buem, has now called the GFA leadership to the meeting as concerns grow over the state of Ghanaian football.

The discussions are expected to focus on the challenges facing the Black Stars and the wider football system, with the government and football authorities seeking longer-term solutions.

Ghana are now under pressure to revive their qualifying campaign and avoid missing a second consecutive Africa Cup of Nations tournament.

The Black Stars failed to qualify for the 2025 AFCON in Morocco after finishing bottom of their qualifying group, ending their run of more than two decades of consecutive appearances at the tournament.

Ghana will return to action in October with a double-header against Somalia, with both matches scheduled to be played at the Accra Sports Stadium.

The four-time African champions will need positive results from those matches to keep their hopes of reaching the 2027 tournament in Kenya, Uganda and Tanzania alive.
