John Antwi eyes Black Stars call up after netting double in Hearts of Oak debut
Hearts of Oak striker John Antwi says he is hopeful of earning a call-up to the Black Stars after making an impressive start to the Ghana Premier League season.
The experienced forward scored twice as Hearts of Oak began their campaign with a convincing 4-0 victory over Berekum Chelsea at the University of Ghana Stadium on Sunday.
Antwi, who joined the Phobians from Dreams FC ahead of the new season, believes his performances at club level could put him in contention for a place in Carlos Queiroz’s Black Stars squad.
The 34-year-old says playing for Ghana remains the ultimate ambition of every local footballer, but he is prepared to remain patient and let his performances do the talking.
“Every player wants to play for the national team, but I will continue to work hard and wait for my opportunity,” Antwi said after the match.
Antwi also praised Hearts of Oak head coach Nebojsa Kapor and his technical team for helping him settle into the club and improve his performances.
The striker said the positive environment created by the Bosnian coach and his backroom staff had boosted his confidence and enabled him to contribute to the team’s strong start.
Antwi will now look to maintain his goalscoring form when Hearts of Oak travel to face Bibiani Gold Stars at DUN’s Park in their second league match this weekend.
