Interior Minister declares May 1 a public holiday

Interior Minister Alhaji Muntaka Mubarak has declared 1st May as a public holiday.

In a statement, he urged all to observe the day as such through the country.

The day has been set aside to commemorate Workers Day celebration.

In a statement, the Minister said “The general public is hereby informed that Friday, 1st May 2026, marks Workers Day (May Day), which is a Statutory Public Holiday and should be observed as such throughout the country.”

May Day, also known as International Workers’ Day, is a holiday celebrating workers and the history of labor organizing.

Every year on May 1st, working people around the world join together for a day of remembrance and demonstrations.

The holiday is a significant display of international solidarity and worker power
