Interior Minister Commissions 24-Unit Apartment for GIS Junior Staff; Cuts Sod for New Senior Staff Flats

The Minister for the Interior, Hon. Mohammed Muntaka Mubarak, has commissioned a newly completed four-storey, 24-unit apartment block for junior staff of the Ghana Immigration Service (GIS) in Tamale.

The facility, which is part of government’s efforts to improve the welfare of security personnel, was constructed by the State Housing Company Limited and fully funded by the government at an estimated cost of GH₵10 million.

In addition to the commissioning, the Minister also cut sod for the construction of a similar facility targeted at senior staff of the Immigration Service in the Northern Region.

Speaking at the commissioning ceremony, Hon. Muntaka highlighted the significance of the project as a reaffirmation of the government’s commitment to ensuring decent living conditions for security personnel in the region. He traced the origins of the project to 2016, when the government, through the Ghana Immigration Service, entered into an agreement with the State Housing Company to construct the apartments to serve officers stationed at the newly expanded Tamale International Airport.

“In 2016, the Government Acting through the Ghana Immigration Service entered into an agreement with the State Housing Company to construct this four storey building which was primarily aimed at providing housing for junior rank officers at the Tamale International Airport.

I strongly believe that this project has paved the way for a fruitful relationship focused on improving the living condition of the Ghana Immigration Service personnel and in the Northern Region.

Ladies and gentlemen, as indicated earlier, the journey to this moment began in 2016 when our government envisioned the expansion of the Tamale Airport and recognized that as our airport developed, so will be the need for adequate accommodation for the personnel who will work at the airport” he said.

Managing Director of the State Housing Company, Mr. John Bawah, said the 24-unit apartment block was completed in February this year and consists of one-bedroom apartments, each with a living room, kitchen, and bathroom. He expressed pride in the durability and quality of State Housing’s projects, stating, “Some of our oldest estates in Tamale still stand the test of time, which speaks volumes about our commitment to quality construction.”

The Comptroller of the Ghana Immigration Service, Mr. Samuel Basintale Amadu, expressed heartfelt appreciation to the government and the State Housing Company for their efforts in resolving accommodation challenges facing the service.

“Honourable Minister, we are sincerely grateful for the government’s intervention. Your continued interest in the Ghana Immigration Service, especially in resolving our infrastructure challenges, is commendable,” he said.

In a related development, Hon. Muntaka used the occasion to reaffirm the government’s resolve to address urban vices, including begging and prostitution, in cities across Ghana. He defended the recent arrest and deportation of over 2,000 beggars, describing the move as necessary to restore order and dignity in urban spaces.

The commissioning and sod-cutting ceremony marked a significant step towards improving conditions for the Ghana Immigration Service in the Northern Region, while reinforcing the government’s broader commitment to security, urban order, and infrastructure development.
