Health Minister urges traditional medicine practitioners to improve standards

The Minister of Health, Kwabena Mintah Akandoh, has emphasized the need for improved standards in traditional medicine practice in Ghana.
Speaking at a stakeholder engagement in Accra on September 4, 2025, the Minister called on traditional medicine practitioners to collaborate in unity and adhere to the standards of the practice.
Despite its importance, traditional medicine practice in Ghana faces several challenges, including poor standards and lack of enforcement of regulations, which have compromised treatment quality.
The Traditional Medicine Practice Council has reported that many practitioners are not in good standing when it comes to renewing their licenses, highlighting the need for greater accountability and adherence to standards.
With over 40,000 traditional medicine practitioners in the country, the Minister stressed that the sector has the potential to grow the economy and play a significant role in the government’s 24-hour economy initiative.
The Minister emphasized that collaboration and unity among traditional medicine practitioners are essential for the sector’s growth and development.
‘‘By working together and building on your strengths, you can improve the quality of services and contribute to the country’s economic development.’’ He said.
The Minister’s call for unity and standards is a timely reminder of the importance of traditional medicine in Ghana’s healthcare system.
‘‘I have asked every sector to give me a report on how they can fit into the 24hr economy. In other countries the traditional medicine is a bedrock of their economies and so can be done here. The fundamental thing is collaboration and unity. Adhere to the standards and ensure the safety of the citizens’’ he further said.
The Traditional Medicine Practice Council and the Ministry of Health have committed to working together to address the challenges facing the sector and to promote greater collaboration and unity among practitioners.
