A Deputy Minister of Health, Mahama Asei Seini, has announced the government’s plan to embark on rigorous recruitment of health professionals to mitigate the impact of the recent brain drain in the health sector.
Data from the Ghana Registered Nurse and Midwives Association (GRNMA) indicates that at least 3,000 nurses and midwives have left the country within the last few years to seek greener pastures.
Speaking to Citi News at the 2023 Induction and Swearing-in of Allied Health Graduates in Accra, the Deputy Health Minister highlighted plans by the government to promptly address the escalating concerns of healthcare professionals in the country.
He further indicated, “You cannot just be training professionals, and they will be leaving the system like that, so it is worrying. And another worry is that, apart from the new ones, the old ones are also leaving; they have gotten more experience, and we need them to do the work and also pass knowledge to the new ones who are coming.”
“So we are praying to resolve, especially replacing those who have left, by going for clearance to employ new ones.”
