Govt: Teachers’ salary arrears to be paid from May

Government has assured the Coalition of Unpaid Teachers that plans are far advanced to clear their 17-month salary arrears through a structured payment schedule beginning May 2026.
The assurance follows a protest march by the group to the Ministry of Finance, where they presented a petition over what they described as prolonged neglect and denial of their rightful earnings.
Earlier, the coalition had submitted a similar petition to the Presidency, where a presidential staffer, Dr Samuel Ayeh, received the document and assured them that their concerns would be addressed.
Addressing the teachers at the Finance Ministry, Deputy Finance Minister Thomas Ampem Nyarko reiterated government’s commitment to resolving the issue, noting that processes are already underway to commence payments.
According to him, payments will be made in phases beginning in May, with affected teachers receiving four months of arrears each month until the backlog is cleared.
“Even though the Finance Minister is out of town, he instructed me to conclude the processes and I wrote to Controller to start the payment of your arrears. That payment will start from May. In May, you will receive four months of arrears, June you will receive another four months, July another four months until the payments are concluded,” he assured.
The development is expected to bring relief to the affected teachers, many of whom have expressed frustration over the prolonged delay in receiving their salaries.
