The Member of Parliament (MP) for Tamale North in the Northern Region, Alhassan Suhuyini has rebuked the government over its handling of the power sector.
He said the government’s “incompetence” in resolving issues in the sector caused the recent power outages being experienced by Ghanaians.
Mr. Suhuyini, a member of the opposition National Democratic Congress, insisted that the Mahama government addressed almost all the challenges in the energy sector and left a roadmap for sustaining those gains before leaving office.
The Tamale North lawmaker, speaking on the Citi TV‘s Breakfast Daily on Thursday, April 29, 2021, said even packages the Mahama administration had secured were lost due to the actions of the current government.
“Because of President Mahama’s vision and foresight, the financial side of the energy sector was fixed. The generation side was fixed, and then we also had the fuel side fixed and the transmission side also improved. This plant at Pokuase right now has been delayed.”
“It is as a result of the NDC’s negotiations with MiDA that [we got] that package but because President Akufo-Addo and his government have been that incompetent, we have even lost that package due to PDS. The NDC handed a complete programme to this government, and all they needed to do was to run with what has been provided for them but because of greed, corruption, and incompetence, we are in this dumsor.”
The Minority in Parliament on Wednesday, April 28, 2021, criticised the government over its management of the power situation in Ghana.
Addressing a press conference, the Ranking Member on the Mines and Energy Committee of Parliament, John Jinapor, chided the government for its inconsistent communications on the current power challenges which have led to intermittent power cuts in parts of the country.
“It should be noted that since the beginning of the year, GRIDCo alone has given six different reasons for the major national outages aside the intermittent localised blackouts, with the most ridiculous reason being attributed to trees falling on high tension transmission lines,” Mr. Jinapor observed.
