GIZ advises Gov’t to build capacities of District and Sub-District Structures

The Program Manager of Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbei (GIZ), Mr. Raphael Frerking has urged the government of Ghana to put efforts into augmenting the capacities of District and Sub- District structures which are defective in operations towards decentralization and financing inclusive development in the country.
According to Mr. Frerking, strengthening the aptitudes of structures such as the Zonal Area Councils and revenue collection agencies will enhance a decentralized governance.

He said that enhancing the capacities of these government institutions is necessary since they are in proximity with citizens and comprehend the needs of citizens.
The Programs Manager made these statements at the close out event of the Northern Zonal GovID program in Tamale.
The Governance for Inclusive Development (GovID) program; commissioned by the Federal Ministry of Economic Cooperation and Development and co-financed by the Swiss and British government, and Ghanaian political partners in October 2019 will be brought to a conclusion in September this year.
The GovID program though has impacted greatly on the overall capacities of Regional Coordinating Councils (RCCs) and Municipal,Metropolitan and District Assemblies (MMDAs), Mr. Frerking has advised that further strengthening of the RCCs and MMDAs will impact immensely on decentralization and inclusive governance in the country.
The Northern Regional Minister, Alhaji Shani Alhassan Saibu stated that measures will be put in place to ensure that coordinators of the program who were trained will perform their duties efficiently in order to sustain the and improve upon the gains of the program.

He appealed to MMDAs, RCCs and the various coordinators to put the knowledge acquired from the program to efficient use in order to sustain the benefits of the program.
Alhaji Shaibu, however, emphasized his optimism towards the efficient use of knowledge acquired by coordinators and government structures to sustain and improve upon benefits of the program.

“ I am optimistic that the knowledge that was acquired here will be put to good use” He said.
