GIS to conduct street sweep in Accra to rescue vulnerable persons, enforce immigration laws

The Ghana Immigration Service (GIS) has announced plans to carry out a targeted enforcement operation in the Greater Accra Region aimed at addressing street begging and enforcing immigration regulations.

In a statement issued on April 14, the Service indicated that the upcoming exercise will focus on rescuing vulnerable individuals, particularly children and others engaged in exploitative begging activities, while also identifying and apprehending unregistered immigrants.

According to the GIS, the initiative forms part of broader efforts to safeguard public welfare, combat human trafficking, and maintain order in public spaces.

The Service noted that the operation builds on lessons and feedback from previous exercises, which it described as successful, and will be conducted at selected locations across Accra.

However, specific details regarding the timing and locations of the sweep have been withheld for security reasons and to protect the integrity of the operation.

The GIS emphasised that the move underscores its commitment to enforcing Ghana’s immigration laws while ensuring the protection of vulnerable populations.

It added that a comprehensive media release with further details will be issued after the operation has been carried out.
