EOCO’s re-arrest of Buffer Stock Ex-CEO ‘very shameful and reprehensible’ – Afenyo-Markin

The Minority Leader in Parliament, Alexander Afenyo-Markin, has strongly criticised the Economic and Organised Crime Office (EOCO) over the re-arrest of former National Food and Buffer Stock Company CEO, Abdul-Wahab Hanan Aludiba, and his wife, Faiza Seidu Wuni after Attorney-General dropped charges against them.
EOCO re-arrested Abdul-Wahab and his wife on Tuesday, May 5 shortly after the Attorney-General discontinued the case against them and 3 others at the High Court.
Explaining the reason behind the withdrawal of the charges in a Facebook post, Deputy Attorney-General, Justice Srem Sai said the decision was taken “following the discovery of fresh evidence.”
This, he noted will “afford each of the accused persons a fair and a more speedy trial in accordance with the constitution.”
Responding to the matter in a post on Facebook, May 6, 2026, Afenyo-Markin described the arrest as “unwarranted” and “needless,” arguing that it follows the collapse of an earlier prosecution initiated by the Attorney-General.
According to him, the two, together with three others, had been standing trial for about a year until the case began to unravel during a Case Management Conference, where objections by lawyers for Abdul-Wahab Hanan were upheld by the court.
He claimed that attempts by the Attorney-General to introduce fresh witness statements without the court’s permission were rejected, forcing the prosecution to withdraw all charges.
The Effutu MP further questioned why the Economic and Organised Crime Office would proceed to re-arrest the couple shortly after the charges were dropped, describing the move as “very shameful, reprehensible and most unworthy of a healthy democracy that Ghana” enjoys.
He further alleged that the suspects have been denied bail and access to their lawyers, despite having previously been granted bail by the court before the charges were withdrawn.
Afenyo-Markin accused the Attorney-General and state agencies of using law enforcement processes as tools for political persecution, particularly targeting members of the opposition.
“The law enforcement processes should be deployed to deal with actual wrongdoing in accordance with due process and not utilised as a propagandist machinery for the Government by arresting and detaining leading members of the opposition,” he stated.
He also criticised what he described as an attempt to sustain the government’s anti-corruption drive narrative, referencing earlier public statements made about the Buffer Stock case.
The Minority Leader urged EOCO and the Attorney-General to immediately release the detained individuals, warning that such actions undermine Ghana’s democratic principles and rule of law.
“I call on EOCO and the Attorney-General to release Hanan Abdul-Wahab and his wife, Faiza Seidu Wuni immediately,” he wrote
He further called on the EOCO Executive Director, Raymond Archer, to ensure the institution operates within the confines of the law and due process.
“This impunity must stop,” Afenyo-Markin stressed, adding that state institutions “must not be turned into a rogue outfit for harassing and torturing innocent citizens extra judicially.”
