Eight suspects arrested over Ablekuma North rerun violence – IGP

The Inspector General of Police (IGP), Christian Tetteh Yohuno, has disclosed that eight suspects have been arrested in connection with the assaults and violence which marred the recently held Ablekuma North constituency rerun elections.
Three journalists, some political figures including former Gender Minister, Hawa Koomson were assaulted during the Ablekuma North election rerun in 19 polling stations on July 11, 2025.
Speaking during a meeting between the leadership of the Ghana Police Service and the Ghana Journalists Association (GJA) in Accra on Wednesday, August 20, the IGP confirmed that he has received information about the arrest of the suspects by the Accra Regional Police Command who are being processed for prosecution.
“The Accra Regional Commander, as of yesterday, said he had eight suspects. Eight suspects have been arrested,” Dr. Yohuno disclosed. “They are being processed, and from the advice I had from the Regional Commander, tomorrow or Friday, they will be put before the court.”
The public, media, and civil society organizations have all strongly condemned the rerun, which was marred by violent scenes.
Videos online captured alleged party agents attacking civilians and onlookers with many demanding accountability and justice.
The IGP has assured that the Police Service is dedicated to upholding justice and holding accountable anyone found guilty, including police officers who did not act professionally during the disturbances.
“We are making progress and we will make sure that whatever happens, justice will be done to those who in one way or the other, did not do their work in a professional manner,” he said.
Dr. Yohuno reiterated the police administration’s zero tolerance for misconduct and emphasised that the integrity of elections—and public trust—depends on the professionalism of law enforcement officers.
