Dismissed KATH accountant’s court case against hospital management adjourned

The Kumasi High Court has adjourned the case involving a former staff of the Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital (KATH) challenging the decision of the hospital’s management to dismiss him after he accused the Chief Executive Officer of misapplying Covid-19 funds.

The plaintiff, Awuni Akyireba, petitioned the Commission on Human Rights and Administrative Justice (CHRAJ) and the Special Prosecutor to investigate the matter over the alleged misapplication of funds.

The hospital’s management denied the claims, while the results of the Commission’s investigation have not been made public.

Shortly after petitioning the two bodies, KATH management sacked him but insisted that his dismissal was not related to the petitions.

The hospital also said the dismissal was because Mr. Akyireba, had breached its code of conduct.

During the court proceedings today, Tuesday, March 15, 2022, the court adjourned the case to 30th March after the legal team of KATH asked to be given more time to respond to the statement of the case filed by the plaintiff.

Mr. Akyireba maintains that the error in his dismissal is “so blatant and glaring.”

“We will send to them a signal that they are a state body… for that matter, they need to respect the rules of the game regarding the human resource management of their people.”

“They just cannot act arbitrarily and go scot-free,” Mr. Akyireba noted.
