CRS and partners develops a Citywide Sanitation plan

The Christian Relief Services (CRS) as part of its CRS’ Urban Wash and Resilience Project, has on Wednesday May 02, 2021, organized a planning workshop for it’s partners in the sanitation chain.

The workshop was aimed at helping develop a comprehensive citywide sanitation plan for the greater Tamale to achieve the outcomes of SDG 6, which talks about Safe, Adequate, Equitable and sustainable sanitation for all.

It also made room for the enhancement of collaboration and adequate planning among major stakeholders in the sanitation sub-sector, that encompasses long-term planning, innovations, financial mobilization and institutional reforms along the entire sanitation service chain.

In a FiilaNews interview with the Development planning officer of the Sagnarigu Municipality, Mr. Toyibu Abdul Hamid indicated that, the pace at which sanitation menace is growing in greater Tamale is an indication that the lives of indigenes are at risk.

According to Mr. Abdul Hamid, “ If care is not taken, citizens will in the near future end up consuming feacal  matter even without knowing, due to improper behavior towards sanitation”.

He meanwhile called for a concerted effort towards the fight against improper sanitation practices in the Greater Tamale.

Stakeholders present include; MMDA’s, Private Solid waste service providers, Liquid waste service providers, representatives from the Muslim and Christian Councils, other NGO/private sector players in the sanitation fight, the media among others.

These stakeholders were segmented into groups and made to formulate a considerable working document on sanitation which in their own view can help in the fight against improper sanitation.

The current state of both solid and liquid waste were highlighted,  with inputs given from various players on the way forward to improving the situation in the Greater Tamale.
