YEFL-Ghana has being implementing a climate change project dabbed GoAdapt project.
The project under the auspices of CLIP and Ghana Venskab seeks to create awareness and build the adaptive capacity of vulnerable communities to become resilient to climate change. The Project Coordinator of GoAdapt, Mr Nurudeen Ibrahim said the project is tackling two areas; that is, to support an inclusive climate adaptative program at the local level and their contributions adopted into the district/National adaptative plan.
On her part, the Advocacy and Engagement Officer, Fathiaya Zakari said the project started with 150 environmental brigades from the Nanton, Savelugu, Kumbungu and Tolon districts. According to her, the brigades were suppose to scout the communities to see the climate issues that need to be talked about. Fathiaya Zakari lamented that, every thing climate change ends in Tamale or Accra, so how do the small holder farmers got to know how climate change affect them? She asked. The recruits the Advocacy and Engagement Officer indicated went through various stages of learning on climate change to enhance their appreciation on the subject matter. She stated that, the small holder farmers bear the brand of the effects of the current climate change. Madam Fathiaya emphasized that, If farmers don’t understand what is causing the effects the climate change, the YEFL-Ghana won’t succeed in it’s intervention. She said one of the reasons is to highlight some years back, how the condition was and now what is the effect and what can be done to solve that. This she indicated led to the action plan, among other things, recruitment of 20 environmental reporters of both social media and main stream media from the districts.
“Most of the small holder farmers faced hardship when it comes to the current Agric, if they don’t understand what is causing it, we might not be able to proceed with our interventions. So the climate instruction camp, we took them through that and made them to understand how some years back, how the conditions were; how the climate was and now, what is the different and ways that can be used to solve that. So at the end of the climate instruction camp, we came out with action plans which are here, some are done, some are not done and they being doing very well because some has to educate their communities members, even the chiefs; stakeholders about bush burnings and others and they have achieved massive results. So, we say what don’t take 20 reporters; 5 from each district”, she stated
