Caleb Yirenkyi scores first Black Stars goal in Wales friendly
Caleb Yirenkyi enjoyed a night to remember on Tuesday after scoring his first goal for the Black Stars in Ghana's 1-1 draw against Wales in Cardiff.

The 19-year-old came off the bench in the second half and made an immediate impact, giving Ghana the lead in a friendly that formed part of the team’s preparations for the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
Introduced in the 60th minute, Yirenkyi needed only six minutes to make his mark. After Wales failed to deal with a dangerous attack led by Ernest Nuamah, the midfielder reacted quickest to the loose ball and calmly slotted home from close range.
The goal was a special moment for the FC Nordsjælland youngster, who was making just his seventh appearance for the senior national team.
Yirenkyi’s rise has been impressive. Since making his debut against Nigeria in the Unity Cup last year, he has steadily grown in importance within the Black Stars setup.
The former Right to Dream Academy graduate first caught the eye with a mature display against Nigeria despite being asked to play out of position at right-back. Since then, he has continued to earn the trust of the coaching staff with his versatility and composure.
His latest contribution comes at the perfect time after being named in Ghana’s final squad for the World Cup.
Although Wales struck late to deny Ghana victory, Yirenkyi’s first international goal was one of the biggest positives from the evening and another sign that the teenager could have a role to play when the tournament begins later this month.
Ghana will open their World Cup campaign against Panama on June 17 before facing England and Croatia in their remaining Group L matches.
