The Bagré Dam in Burkina Faso has reached a water level of 234.50 metres, representing 93.31% of its capacity, according to an update on the controlled water spillage situation.
The latest update indicates that the reservoir level is currently 0.50 metres below the normal reservoir level of 235.0 metres.
The Water Resources Commission (WRC), in the update, said the situation is being closely monitored as the dam approaches the level at which controlled water release may become necessary.
According to the update, Sonabel may open the spillway of the Bagré Dam if the reservoir level reaches 234.75 metres.
“If this should occur, you will be updated on the date and time of the start of the water release,” the WRC stated.
The development comes as water levels at the dam continue to rise, with the current level only 0.25 metres below the threshold for the possible opening of the spillway.
The WRC has therefore indicated that further communication will be issued should the reservoir reach the 234.75-metre mark and Sonabel proceeds with the controlled release of water.
Residents and communities that could potentially be affected by the release are expected to rely on subsequent updates from the relevant authorities on the timing and implications of any water discharge.
