Akwaboah reveals why he decided to stop writing music for others

Ghanaian artiste Akwaboah has said that he took a decision to stop writing music for others because of the persistent lack of credit from persons he wrote songs for.

In an interview on 3 Music TV, Saturday, July 5, Akwaboah noted that he will rather perform his own songs, henceforth, than write for others.

The singer recounted how he once saw an artiste receive an award for a song he wrote, only to be excluded entirely from the acceptance speech.

“Initially, I was writing songs for people but sometimes I don’t get the credit. They get on stage and then say I thank God, I thank my manager, I thank Charterhouse and leave.

“There was this lady who once won award and was thanking everyone on stage: her manager, her team, even the producer, but not me. Meanwhile, the song she won the award with was one I wrote,” he said.

That moment, he explained, was a wake-up call.

“I was like okay, that’s a lesson. So, from now, I will sing mine,” Akwaboah stated.

Commenting on how he featured actress Nadia Buari in his new song ‘Smile Again”, he said he needed a female singer to interpret the song to listeners and decided to choose Nadia.

Though previously known for penning hits for others, Akwaboah said the experience made him realise the importance of owning and interpreting his own work.
