Two-thirds of Zimbabweans to need food aid by year’s end – UN

The UN food agency has appealed for $250m (£190m) of extra funding to avert what it describes as a humanitarian catastrophe in Zimbabwe.

The World Food Programme (WFP) said nearly two-thirds of the population will need food aid by the end of this year.

The country is suffering from a poor harvest, rampant inflation and a growing coronavirus problem.

The WFP said the Covid-19 lockdown has led to massive unemployment and rural hunger as urban migrants are returning to their villages, where there is little to eat.
