Sharp rise in Ghana’s coronavirus cases

Ghana has now recorded a total of 132 confirmed cases of coronavirus and three deaths, a sharp increase from 68 confirmed cases on Wednesday, the information ministry says.

All three deaths were elderly people with underlying chronic health conditions.

According to the Ghana Health Service, 78 of the confirmed cases are from those under mandatory quarantine who were tested after arriving in Ghana from abroad.

More than 1,000 travellers have been quarantined and are undergoing mandatory testing at the Noguchi Memorial Institute for Medical Research and the Kumasi Centre for Collaborative Research.

The majority of the confirmed cases are Ghanaians who returned to the country from abroad.

Ghana’s borders have been shut for a period of two weeks as a precautionary measure to prevent the spread of the disease.
