We’re operating with the lowest-ever fleet of buses in the company’s history – Metro Mass Transit

Deputy Managing Director of the Metro Mass Transit Ltd, Haroun Apaw Wiredu has disclosed that the company is operating with the lowest number of buses than it has recorded in its history.

He noted that the company currently has a total of 115 buses operating across the country.

Speaking in an interview on TV3’s Hot Issues, Sunday, January 18, 2026, he said despite the lowest number of buses, the company has managed to record its highest ever revenue.

“As we speak, surprisingly we are rooting the lowest-ever fleet of buses in the history of the company. This is also the moment we are recording the highest ever revenue in the history of the company,” he stated.

He continued: “when we came in, the President gave us performance contract of 3 months that as quickly as possible, we should fully automate the activities of metro mass, especially our revenue mobilization just to remove the hand-to-hand contact, because those hand-to-hand contact gives room for the pilfering, leakages, stealing and all those.

“So, we came to meet an ITMS solution of 45% coverage across Ghana. So within two months, we were able to fully automate the system. Currently, we have done about 99% across Ghana. We have been able to move our revenue mobilization.”

Drawing parallel with the operations of the company under the previous government, he noted that the company is generating more revenue that it did in 2024 when it was operating with more buses than currently.

“At some point, the company somewhere two or three years ago around 2024, they were rooting about 250 buses in some cases, they were recording GHC9.3 million. The operational cost of the company at that time was GHC9.6 million so they could not even pay salaries.

“That was how come at the time, anytime you see stories about Metro Mass, it has been about workers agitation, poor conditions of service, poor management here and there.

“As we speak currently, when we came, with the full automation of our revenue mobilization, it has been back-to-back,” he remarked.

According to him, between June and July last year, Metro Mass generated revenue between GHC 13 to GHC 14 million, a period he says was the company’s low moments.

“…the least amongst all, normally our low peak moments are between June and July when the rains are up, even around that, we are able to record about GHC 13 to GHC 14 million for rooting averagely 115 buses,” he said.
