Stephen Appiah delighted to be appointed as national anti-doping board member

Former Black Stars captain Stephen Appiah has expressed his deep gratitude following his appointment to Ghana's newly formed National Anti-Doping Board, vowing to champion the values of integrity and fair play in his latest role serving the nation.

The football icon, who also holds the position of Vice Chairman of the Black Stars Management Committee, sees the appointment as an extension of his lifelong dedication to Ghanaian sport. In a statement on Instagram, Appiah wrote, “Football gave me everything, and protecting its integrity is a duty I do not take lightly.

I am grateful for the opportunity to serve Mother Ghana once again… I accept this role with a strong commitment to fair play, discipline and clean sport for generations to come.”

Appiah’s appointment brings a unique perspective to the critical body, combining his unparalleled experience as a top-level athlete with his current administrative insight. As the captain who led Ghana to its first FIFA World Cup in 2006 and a historic quarter-final in 2010, he is one of the nation’s most respected sporting figures. His post-playing career has kept him at the heart of football, particularly focused on player welfare and management.

The National Anti-Doping Board was officially inaugurated at a ceremony in Accra on Tuesday. It will be chaired by Professor Francis Dodoo, the former president of Ghana Athletics and the Ghana Olympic Committee. The board’s establishment marks a significant step in Ghana’s efforts to promote clean sport and adhere to global anti-doping standards.

For Stephen Appiah, this new responsibility represents a profound honour and a chance to translate the principles of discipline and excellence that defined his playing career into a mission to safeguard the future of Ghanaian athletics.
