SSNIT Holds Stakeholder Engagement with Informal Sector

As part of its mandate under the National Pensions Act, 2008, Act 786 to provide social protection for workers both employees and the self-employed and their dependents, the Social Security and National Insurance Trust (SSNIT), has today (Thursday 31st March, 2022) organized a stakeholder engagement meeting with workers in the informal sector in Tamale.

This year’s event which aims at extending pension coverage to the self employed and informal sector workers, brought together members from the Dressmakers Association, Hairdressers Association, and Garages Associations among others, to educate them on the need to begin their insurance contributions with SSNIT.

In his submission, the National Director of SSNIT, Dr. John Ofori-Tenkorang dispelled the notion that SSNIT is mainly for government workers, saying the insurance trust is for every Ghanaian who is working and making income.

Mr. Ofori-Tenkorang made an appeal to the informal-sector workers and self-employed Ghanaians, to join SSNIT to ensure that the scheme is sustainable for generations to come.

“The fact that nature and old age won’t allow a person to work forever in life, there is the need to contribute towards the future which is unknown and can be cruel without any better plans” He added.

He further outlined the benefits in paying SSNIT contributions saying the scheme has several benefits to offer contributors hence the need to remain consistent with contributions at all times.

He attested that people who are SSNIT beneficiaries live longer than their counterparts who hitherto did not have any insurance coverage with SSNIT.

On claims, he indicated that with the improvement in service delivery on the part of SSNIT, claims can now be made within 10 working days without any difficulties.
